RPWDL Chapter 18

Chapter 18 – Being Vilified

[ Xia Teng’s Little Daughter: #Mama Movie# is a classic piece of work. I originally wanted to see another movie, but the next showing was two hours away, so my boyfriend and I watched this comforting familial love movie to pass the time. It is very heartwarming, and after watching it, my whole being felt cozy and warm. I want to kiss Xia Teng, she is such a good mother. I will not say anything extra and spoil it, just go to the cinema to watch~ ]

When Xu Lang went to check online movie reviews, he saw that this review was the one with the most likes and comments.

Xu Lang was stunned for a moment. Is this a false advertisement?

He tapped the comments section and saw that it was harmonious. Many people posted their movie ticket stubs and supported the blogger’s statement, saying that they hadn’t seen such a heartwarming movie for a long time.

Occasionally one or two would say: [ But Douban’s comments are completely different from the ones here! So which side should we believe? ]

Obviously, this group of people was abused by the movie and now they were encouraging the others to be abused together.

erynalu

Xu Lang had guessed correctly; the movie that was previously criticized due to its female lead, after being replaced with Xia Teng, had now reached a new peak on its rating.

With almost zero negative reviews, some even crowned it as “the light of domestic horror movies”.

The number of people lining up to watch the movie also continued to rise.

The gap between the movie’s box office compared to other movies’ that were released around the same time was also getting bigger.

Xia Teng’s Weibo followers suddenly increased by several millions.

In addition to her good grades and good acting skills, her Weibo posts were rather cheerful and optimistic, so her die-hard fans number also grew.

At this time, Xia Teng posted on Weibo.

Contrary to people’s expectations, she didn’t mention the movie that was just released but posted a selfie with a caption: [ Not sure when I’ll be able to play as a beautiful young girl… ]

The fans burst into laughter because it was very true. Her first time starring in the silver screen was as a plain and desperate—even a little stupid—rural woman, while afterwards she acted again as a mature yet desperate mother.

It was to the point that everyone forgot that this person was only eighteen years old, a genuine young and beautiful girl.

Xia Teng looked at the comments filled with fans who refused to admit that she was a beautiful young girl, smiled, put down her phone, and continued to attend classes.

erynalu

She and Xu Lang had the same major, but they didn’t go to the classes together.

Moreover, whenever she was free, she would take on some roles with few scenes to earn money here and there.

She had already given Xu Lang over one million. However, when Xu Lang bought the house where they lived now, he put it under Xia Teng’s name.

It had to be known that with just one million something yuan, the money wouldn’t cover the price of the house.

Xia Teng originally didn’t have any plan for this, but she thought she shouldn’t be too unreasonable about this matter. In any case, it would all be fine once she worked hard to gain more money, no need to reject his good intention.

Thus, she accepted it.

erynalu

Of course, if there were fans, there would also be anti-fans.

In particular, some of Xia Teng’s new fans who were ignorant. They trampled on the other horror movie that was released around the same time as Xia Teng and co.’s movie.

Technically, the fans were also speaking the truth but the other movie’s fans were not happy about it.

It’s fine if you like your own stuff, but why do you have to step on us.

There was no need to be scared of brainless fans, but opponents who were crafty should be feared.

What was the scariest thing in the entertainment circle? Of course it was scandals!

Very well.

They specially set up a discussion group and started digging Xia Teng’s dirty laundry up. If they couldn’t find one, they would make one!

In any case, everyone was willing to read gossip, but it would be unlikely for people to check whether the gossip was true or not.

Half-truths and half-lies would be the best.

And so they started to look around, starting to see if they could dig out any problem from Xia Teng’s character.

Then they soon found that the other actors and actresses who worked with Xia Teng all praised Xia Teng for her good character and good acting skills.

Forget it, let’s abandon this direction.

So they began to tap into the popular entertainment industry topics such as the unspoken rules and other shady dealings and so on.

Wait a second, the film investor of Xia Teng’s other movie where she acted as the female-number-three was Reunion Film and TV Corporation, and now the film investor for this movie where Xia Teng became the female lead was also the same company.

Okay, the “truth” part of the half-truth and half-lies is here.

As long as one’s brain hole is big enough, there is nothing that cannot be turned into shady stuff!

[*brain hole: empty spot in the brain that would be filled with imagination—the bigger the hole/cave, the bigger the imagination.]

Therefore, when Xia Teng went to Weibo again, she found that she suddenly had a financial backer out of nowhere. And not only that, she also had become a mistress who destroyed other people’s family.

Xia Teng blinked her eyes, and saw the fight in her Weibo comment section. She couldn’t help but post on Weibo and asked: [ Did I just transmigrate? ]

The fans below were placating her, while fans of other stars who had conflicts with Xia Teng came to give negative comments.

Xia Teng looked at her so-called financial backer—a middle-aged man who was a little fat. He was rumored to be a manager in Reunion Film and Television, and allegedly invested in the two movies that Xia Teng starred in.

As the scolding continued, the comments turned into more offensive. They also attacked fans who were supporting Xia Teng, saying that they were all similar like their idol—the third party in a relationship. Xia Teng had no choice but to close her Weibo’s comment section.

Then she sent a post to explain: [ I will close the comment section for now to let everyone calm down a bit and listen to my explanation. The filming at first was really a coincidence, and it was completely different than what people believed. It wasn’t because I know so-and-so CEO and was kept. On the winter vacation of my senior high school year, I saw an advertisement about winter vacation job in a train station. The pay was six thousand, food and lodging included. At that time, I was still foolish and haven’t seen the world, so I called to sign up right away. I didn’t expect it would be a pyramid scheme, so I acted stupid and tricked them so they could get reported to the police. In the process, I got to know Director Jin, and he said that I am his female-number-three that was written in his play! He asked me if I want to act. I asked him if there is any pay, and if food and lodging are included. He said yes, and so I went. A fragment here and a piece there, I accepted quite a few roles. I can’t help but say—acting is really nice. After shooting that movie, I promised someone that I wouldn’t act during my senior year and would study well. And after the college entrance exam ended, I received Director Lin Ce direct message from Weibo <picture>, and only after that I received this movie. From the start there hasn’t been any investment firm that I relied on to snatch other people’s role and so on and so forth. ]

Xia Teng’s lengthy post was accompanied with some pictures. She rationally explained the things regarding her process in entering the entertainment circle from beginning to the end.

Xia Teng’s fans were delighted. [ So, you originally acted for the sake of money and room and board? ]

[ Come to my house and be my young wife, salary and cards all will be handed over to you, food and shelter included, and also gift you a big-racked small-faced flirty whore to warm your bed~ ]

[ Calling Xia Teng your young wife, you are overly ambitious. When I look at her, I just want to call her mom! ]

[ I feel sorry for the beautiful young girl! ]

When Xu Lang saw the situation, he realized that Xia Teng had basically reversed the situation.

At this time, the crew of《Mama》happened to be invited to a variety show.

Xu Lang thought about Xia Teng’s nature and felt that Xia Teng could attract many fans without needing to do anything.

Compared to her in the previous life, she was now much more cheerful and amusing.

The author had something to say:
Updated, this show was the catalyst~
Xia Teng is about to get enlightened~

Translator’s corner:
Tbh I’m not too sure about the young wife comment, because the term could also mean a daughter-in-law. But I guess the commenter is a young person and also a woman (which is why she is offering herself for Xia Teng basically), so it was unlikely to be daughter-in-law? I don’t know, I feel my reading comprehension was challenged there… *sweats*

  1. Yeah. Not sure about real life Weibo/whatever social media platform they use, but in these kinds of novels, the author usually writes in some female fans who are so besotted with the FL that they joke about wanting to marry/”become gay” for them, so I think your reading is correct.

I want to know how XT is going to be enlightened? scratches head

Thanks for the chapter and stay safe!

  3. About the daughter in-law terms in chinese netizens , I guess, they want her to be part of their family, making her the ‘daughter in-law’. It is just the way how Chinese grammar play. They got a specific terms or titles for people in family , like Saosao (or sister in-law) , jiefu (elder sister’s husband) , a different terms for calling uncles and aunties in maternal and paternal side of family. In here, they used the term daughter in-law ,maybe because they want her to be the daughter in-law of their family who married in.. something like that. The way Chinese netizens uses puns to avoid censorship are quite colorful 😅 and sometimes kinda confusing. I even read a MTLed raw before that confused the word shuzi 叔子 , as Uncle even though it should be used as husband’s younger brother. 😂 It confused me 😅 like why is she calling him uncle? 😂 It should be brother in-law 😂😂 so yeah, just like other languages, Chinese is confusing too.

    • Ahh yes, I can see why MTL would translate shuzi as uncle, because the character 叔 is uncle. Usually my brain would automatically substitute the wrong name/terms in MTL into the correct ones once I read them for too long 😂
