RPWDL Chapter 19

Chapter 19 – I’m Very Outstanding

Where Did All the Movies Go? was an entertainment program that featured currently popular movies’ cast and crew as their guest.

The selling point was that there was no script; the whole crew had to find things to talk about by themselves, so the ratings had always been rather good.

Many crews had appeared on this show, relying on the harmonious atmosphere of the team to attract fans. Of course, there were also crews who relied on internal drama and catfights to stand out and gain attention.

The《Mama》crew stood in the backstage, listening to the hosts introducing their movie.

“Recently we have a dark horse among the newly released movies. Does the audience know the name of this movie that incorporates warm familial love?”

“Mama~” The audience shouted in cooperation.

“Let’s give the team behind this movie a warm welcome to the stage~”

Director Lin Ce took everyone to the stage.

On the other side, Xu Lang was sitting in the audience and for the first time, he found that Xia Teng had grown up before he knew it.

She was talking and laughing on the stage without a trace of timidity.

Until she was asked, “Does Jin-ge meet your criteria as your friends?”

Jin-ge was the male lead actor of the movie. Because of his handsome looks that caused infatuation, he had attracted many fans.

Xia Teng was stunned for a moment, then said, “Of course we have been friends.”

Then the host obviously didn’t let Xia Teng go, and continued to ask, “Then what kind of boyfriend does Xia Teng like?”

Xia Teng blinked, then said, “The one whose grades are better than mine.”

Everyone there knew that Xia Teng scored 701 points in the college entrance examination, better scores than her…

It was obvious that Xia Teng was evading the topic, so the host began to ask the male lead actor.

The male lead actor spoke quite a lot in cooperation.

Xia Teng fell into a daze in the corner. She didn’t talk anymore.

Xu Lang felt that Xia Teng’s state was not right.

Until the end, Xia Teng was very quiet, as if caught in some complicated problem, and frowned from time to time.

After the interview, Xu Lang originally planned to wait for Xia Teng to go home together, but after thinking about it, he left first.

However, just as he got home, Xia Teng also arrived home in a hurry.

“What’s wrong?” Xu Lang felt that the expression on Xia Teng’s face was a bit strange, so he asked worriedly.

Xia Teng’s face was flushed, and she didn’t dare to look at Xu Lang at all. “It’s okay, I’m just hungry…”

She remembered that when the host asked her on stage about what kind of boyfriend she liked, the first person that came to her mind was Xu Lang.

After such a thought appeared, it could no longer be restrained.

Every smile and every action of Xu Lang was replayed in her mind…

She couldn’t control her heartbeat.

On the other hand, a scary question arose in her mind, does Xu Lang like anyone?

There were many people in the school who liked Xu Lang. But what about Xu Lang?

Does he like any of them?

Xia Teng just thought that if there would be a day when she had to give her place up to another person—Xu Lang would smile to that person, watch a movie with that person, and even hug…

Xia Teng felt that she was about to lose her breath.

“Did something happen?” Xu Lang frowned, Xia Teng’s state was very wrong.

The entertainment industry was indeed not a pure land, but he had dealt with a lot of things already, so Xia Teng should not have any interaction with those.

Xia Teng’s heart felt uncomfortable as if a cat was scratching it, and seeing Xu Lang’s concerned eyes, she couldn’t hold back and said, “They say I’m good-looking… I also make a lot of money… and my grades are good too…”

Xu Lang: “????”

Still, Xia Teng couldn’t say the sentence “I’m rather excellent… Can I like you…”

In the end, under Xu Lang’s suspicious eyes, she fled.

Translator’s Corner:
It’s a short chapter~ *celebrates*
Xia Teng is so cute hehe

By the way, for those who are wondering, “-ge” means like big brother but could be unrelated, kinda like oppa in Korean. I was debating on whether to use Brother or –ge but in the end I used the Chinese pinyin version.

  1. Aw, she finally realised. Wonder if this will spark anything in XL?

Also, the perennial question of whether you should us -ge/-xiaojie/etc in translations. Personally, I’m in favour – just like how -san in Japanese doesn’t translate directly to “Mr./Miss,” the Chinese suffixes don’t really mean the same as their English counterparts (or, I should say, aren’t used in the same way, English v. Chinese – to my understanding).

Thanks for the chapter and stay safe!

    • Yup haha, but at some point it had to be translated in English or else the readers will have to memorize a lot of terms, for example like biaoge which means elder brother cousin from mother side. Not to be confused with tangge which is elder brother cousin from father side….
And memorizing just the pinyin requires context because it could mean many different things…
Especially in ancient China themed novels where there are tons of terms…

In the end, it’s always a big question for us translators 😆

      • Feel like biaoge gets more use than tangge (I’ve heard the latter, but not the former lol). And ancient Chinese novels omg I enjoy when the original terms are kept but if I stop reading and then jump in again a couple of months later it can be a LOT.

      • Exactly! I am very thankful for translators who posted glossary so it’s easier to recall the terms. But I also imagine it would be hard and could prevent me from getting immersed in the story if I don’t have any basic Chinese language knowledge. I guess one way is to read more to get used to it eventually, just like -san or -chan in Japanese manga 😛
